The Power Women Have Over Men

Popular myth says women have been powerless for centuries and have only recently been liberated from male oppression. On one level this is true: Women have been denied access to the levers of societal power, or “hard power” as some call it. But women have always possessed “soft power.” This indirect power is embodied in well-known female archetypes: the Jewish mother who controls her family through guilt, the trophy wife who uses her looks to control a man and his money, the TV housewife who tricks her husband into doing what she wants. As Mama Maria said in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding: “The man is the head [of the house], but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants.”

You have much more power over your husband than you may think. Men may rule the wider world, but women rule the sphere that really counts. You have the power to make a man’s domestic existence heavenly or hellish. Proverbs 25:24 (NKJV) says, “It is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than in a house shared with a contentious woman.”
